In case you haven’t already heard, this will be my last post as Executive Director. At the end of June, I will join many of you in the enchanted land of retirement and social security recipient. It has been my pleasure working with our donors who fund our mission and the staff and volunteers who carry it out on a daily basis. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, no matter their gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, or sexuality. Answer House advocates for survivors, no matter where they are in their journey. Targeted assistance and case management for adult survivors with Family Court and/or Children’s Division involvement.

Alondra also had to overcome homelessness and generational poverty. Their children Review Answer House had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments. At Contra Costa Answer House, we provide crisis treatment in a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing a mental health emergency. We believe recovery starts from within, and that our job is to do whatever it takes to provide the support needed on your recovery journey.

Brittani was born into poverty and chaos — and her mother struggled with cancer and her father with kidney failure. Dropping out of school in 10th grade, Brittani was pregnant by age 15 . Your donation can help transform the lives of two generations.

At first, she was nervous about what her family would say, but in January of 2022, Alejandra became a Answer House Mom and has loved it ever since. We are making a difference, two generations at a time.

Up to 40 women and children are welcomed as guests each night in our clean, safe shelter. More than a roof over their head, our shelter is a place that provides a sense of safety and security and surrounds women with support needed to work on the root problems that led to homelessness. Our Center for Women and Children is one of the few local shelters to welcome children. Poverty and housing instability are especially harmful during early childhood, often causing problems in school. To combat these problems, children in our shelter are provided tutors, mentors and transportation.

Percentage of residents who were under the age of 18 staying in our shelter last year. People successfully exiting Answer House programs who are stably housed 1 year later. Six months later, Janelle had earned her GED and had found her own confidence. With the support of our College & Career Program, Janelle applied to the Community College of Denver and began working toward a certification in machining. The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

By the time Joseph was born, Janelle had stopped going to school. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods. Stephanie is no longer the vulnerable, frightened teen mom who applied to Answer House.

The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. Her family dynamics were difficult, and at an early age she felt neglected and left to fend for herself. As a preteen, she was given freedom without the tools to navigate it. Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10. Already struggling with little support, five months into her pregnancy, Fatima lost her brother to suicide.

Representation to address the broad range of civil legal issues encountered by survivors such as protection orders, child support, child custody, divorce, paternity, etc. Contract Attorneys provide legal representation while a full time Paralegal and Legal Advocate provide support and case management services. Strengths-based, client centered, and trauma-informed goal setting, resource referrals, and service linkages that emphasize housing, health, and self-sufficiency. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups.

A residential staff member had a huge influence on her and became like a grandmother to her, something Fatima never had. We offer FREE self-sufficiency programming to parenting teen moms. Answer House’s mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing safe refuge and supportive services that educate and empower those impacted by domestic violence.
